►  The Chapel of Notre-Dame de la Garde

The Chapel of Notre-Dame de la Garde - Etretat

The inhabitants decided to build a chapel consecrated to the Virgin After a mission preached by Father Michel in 1854. The sailors carried on their back and on their arms the materials intended for the building. On August 6th, 1856, the chapel was blessed.

Destroyed in August, 1942 a new chapel was built and inaugurated on August 22nd, 1950.

 

►  The Castle of Les Aygues

The Castle of Les Aygues -Etretat

Situated on the road of Ivory and Spices, the Castle is classified historic monument. Built in 1866, the villa received famous personalities like Offenbach and A. Dumas.

Property of Prince Lubomirski, it becomes later the bathing residence of the Queens of Spain Marie-Christine de Bourbon Sicile and Isabelle II.

►  The vieux marché

The vieux marché - Etretat

In the past, a farm, a puddle, a channel and a small bridge were on the square. Following torrential rains, the puddle was filled in and happened to become the marketplace where wooden huts arise.

In 1926, the municipality decided to give the construction of those markets to the Companions of La Manche with the wood of the Brionne’s city. Today, these markets shelter shops.

A commemorative tablet of the First and the Second World War reminds that there was a military hospital in Etretat.

 

►  The Church of Notre Dame

The Church of Notre Dame - Etretat

It was built in the XIIth century under the patronage of the abbots of Fécamp and thanks to the generosity of three Mathilde. The church has kept in its nave some typical lines of the Norman Romanesque style as well as its gate - although it had been modified in the XIXth century.

However, the lightness, the soaring up of the choir but before all the Lantern Tower, jewels of this church, all belong to the Gothic style. Let’s point a XIXth century organ, signed by Cavaillé-Coll.

 

►  The Protestant Temple

The Protestant Temple - Etretat

Built in 1883 by the architect Bénard, this Protestant Temple in flint and bricks is typical of the cauchois style. Its wooden vault and its stained-glass windows make this reformed temple exceptional. Famous personalities were married there such as André Gide in 1895.
In July, August and September mass is celebrated every Sunday at 11 am.


►  Monument Nungesser and Coli

Monument Nungesser and Coli - Etretat

An arrow was erected in 1963 (a slope of 60° and 24 meters high on its axis).It was built as a tribute to Nungesser and Coli, the first aviators who attemted on May, 8th 1927 to cross The North Atlantic Ocean aboard the White Bird.
